Why does handmade cost so much?

Why would you pay $30 for a set of pillow covers when you can get a complete set of pillows for roughly $20 to $25 dollars at Wal-Mart? The answer is quality craftsmanship. In this post, I am going to lay out the steps from picking the fabric to posting on Etsy, to show just how much money, time, and effort go into creating a one of a kind handmade product.

When you visit Sarah Lyall Home, you see a listing photo much like this one:

It all begins with a trip to a local fabric store or a visit to one of my favorite online suppliers. I have to look around for the best deals and scope out coupons. I cannot pass along a great deal on home decor if I don’t get a good deal myself. Sometimes, this part of the process can take hours. The process is quicker if I can find what I need online, if I have to go to a fabric store I can be half a day or more in obtaining supplies. Next, I have to figure out what to do with a large amount of fabric like this:

I have a small cutting area, so it is difficult sometimes to figure out how to cut down large amounts of home decor fabric. The next step is to cut out the pieces to make a pillow. This process doesn’t take a terribly long time, but when you have several to do it can constitute an evenings work:

When you have your pieces cut out, you then need to check and make sure they match up:

Once you have matched up your pieces, you have to hem your edges, which requires ironing, pinning, and sewing:

Once the seems are sewn then the pillow is laid out and all pieces are checked for accuracy before moving on to the next step, which is sewing around the outside edges. Finally, the pillow cover is put on a form to check for fit.

So you see, when a handmade artist has to charge a little more than Wal-Mart might for their art, they aren’t trying to cheat you, they are just trying to make a living doing what they love.

On another note, I just released my new line today. I am hoping to have all these new designs in the store soon:

New Year, New Room Design Ideas

I was sitting around late last night waiting for the ball to drop, when I got a little bored. No New Year’s party here. I have been visiting my parents and unfortunately both of them have slightly different strains of the flu. I don’t have it yet, knock on wood, but I have been trying to take care of them.

In my post nursing, bored state, I decided to give myself a budget of $1000 and design an awesome bedroom using purple and grey. Of course, I wanted to include a lot of handmade elements, but I did shop some commercial stores as well. I will take you on a tour of my room now so that you can create the look. Where possible, I will also tell you ways to save so that your room could come in at even less than $1000.

In my hypothetical world, my room was already painted a medium gray and had a bed with white sheet, nightstand, and dressing table.

I decided to start with the rooms fabrics. I did a quick search for some handmade curtains and found just what I was looking for at Castle Creek Designs.

These gorgeous curtains only set me back $190, I still had $810 to work with :)

Next, the bed needed a comforter. I decided to go with a classic white down alternative quilt from Target, $80.00. This is expensive for a quilt, I know. But, comfort is a priority.

Still at Target, this bed skirt will add a bit of polish to the bed. This bed skirts is $28.

These gray pillow cases, also from Target, will tie in the color in the curtains and on the walls and only cost us $23.

Propped in front of the standard grey pillows, these streamlined stripe pillows will play in well with the modern feel of the curtains. You can find these at Festive Home Decor for only $34.

Next up we needed a little accent pillow to finish the head of the bed. I found just the ticket at Kain Kain for $21.

I love how this pillow introduces the eye to the rooms accent color in a very subtle way.

One more thing and the bed will be complete. We need a throw to fold across the bottom and it needs to have a more direct hit of the purple. I found the perfect throw at Overstock.com for $42.

If you are keeping score you know that we still have $582 and a gorgeous bed and curtains at this point.

Next, we need a purple rug to go just under the bed, this rug will add the accent color to the floor and provide a soft place to step out of bed onto. I found this one at Overstock.com for $86.

Now, lets turn our attention to the walls. I found this uber modern star burst mirror at Inspiring4u2 for $35. This wall art will look great centered on the wall behind the bed.

Next up I found this grouping of purple prints that will look great against the gray paint, this should go on the wall to the right or left of the bed..opposite the door. This grouping can be found at Cats Beads for $35. Modern black frames run around $10 a piece so we will add another $40 here for the frames, still $75 dollars for this much art isn’t bad!

This next art print was chosen to give the room a bit of a classic feel. You can find it at Tina Crespo for $55. Again, we will add $20 for an inexpensive frame and come out with $75 on this wall. This should go on the wall near the foot of the bed.

Finally, I thought a shelf ensemble would look good on the last side wall, the one with the door. I found this floating shelf at Target for $23 (ignore the art on the shelf, I have my own).

The following two items will go on the shelf, this set of vintage books from Beach Baby Blues for $28.

and these bookends from Black Lady Pots for $10.

These vintage irons will compliment the vintage cameras in the photo on the wall.

Now, I have the major elements of the room in place. I can now add the accessories (we have $250 left)!

This light grey tray from Gleaming Renditions will look great sitting on the purple throw on the bed, for a mere $21.

The following items from Leopatti1121 (postcard) and Locolace (journal) would look great in the tray..postcard $4, Journal $10.

Finally, you could add the following items to the dressing table and nightstand to complete the look. Purple vases ($30) from Rics Relics, clock ($15) from Berry Place, Perfume ($20) from ODANA, Candle holders ($12) from Julie Dye Craft, and Dressing Mirror ($19) from Pherds Finds.

There it is at $881. That is $119 to spare. What do you think? I think it came out quite elegant.

You could save money in a number of places. You could get mass produced curtains. You could get a cheaper comforter and you could check out TJ Maxx for accessories.

Let me know what you like and what you would have done differently!

Emerald Green

Word around the net has it that emerald green is going to be the new “it” color for 2013. I think Emerald Green is pretty, so I am excited to start incorporating some of it in my new line for the store. While I don’t always follow trends, I do get excited when something I actually like starts trending. Believe it or not, mustaches weren’t my thing really. Some other colors I have been seeing while clothes shopping are deep purples and reds. I think we are in for another year of beautiful colors. I am just happy we got past the light blue and brown stage. I was ready to move on to more bold colors and designs.

Allow me to make a point:

Aren’t these gorgeous earrings from JBMDesigns fabulous? I think you could pair these with any number of colors and they would make an elegant statement.

I had to show off these earrings, because I think of clothing and accessories for myself in much the same way as I think of accessories for my home. Chances are if I would wear the color, and I would so wear those gorgeous earrings, I would display the same color in my home.

Let’s look at how one might work some emerald green into their home decor. You could paint the walls that color, but if you are not ready for such a dramatic statement, maybe you could start with a few accessories.

This vase would look amazing with a few fresh flowers in it. I would sit it on an entryway table or any side table that needed some dressing up. Grab it right now, at possum109 (interesting store name I think!)

This vintage wine bottle would look excellent sitting on a kitchen counter or a sideboard in the dinning room. You could just sit it by itself or you could put some tall flowers in it, the ideas are endless. You could also mix this wine bottle in with some different color bottles for a unique look. Get it now at Teresastreasuresetc.

Even more ways to go green, quite literally, all these items are vintage or handmade which lessons there carbon imprint.

Get the goods:

Clockwise from top right:

1. Cushion from Originalboutique.

2. Kitchen towel from SweetnatureDesigns.

3. Rug from greenatheartrugs.

4. Green bottles from Sarahlyallhome, yep my first foray into the emerald green movement! These bottles are so pretty I had to debate whether or not I should put them in the store.

5. Green tray from Penlopecoutoredesign.

So what do you think? I think I am going to like the emerald green craze….

Christmas 2012

As per my usual, I have not updated in quite some time. Being a doctoral student and small business owner leaves very little time for anything else. But, fingers crossed I have some new and exciting ideas for this blog going into 2013. I would like to institute some psychology and business topics, I am still in the planning stages though.

But, today, I wanted to highlight some awesome Christmas items from across Etsy. Check dates, but for some of these shops if you act quickly you can still get your item in time for your Christmas celebration.

You can get these gorgeous prints at FieldandFlower on Etsy.

Super cute, get it at ABannerAffair on Etsy

What a cute truck, get it at CreativeJunkee on Etsy.

So, there you have a gorgeous Christmas roundup from Etsy. Merry Christmas!

Incorporating a theme

Hi everyone, I guess it is time for another post. I keep telling myself that I am going to do better…but, alas, I still tend to leave some space between posts. Maybe, I will get better with time. Anyway, today’s post is about incorporating a theme, without letting the theme overwhelm your whole design. I am going to focus on pets, mainly because a gorgeous kitty, aptly named by me, Miss Kitty, has recently adopted me. Yes, she adopted me, not the other way around. She came to my door meowing and hungry and she has kind of just took up.

So, how do you incorporate decor items into your home that are pet related without making your home look like that of a cat lady or dog person or whatever animal you may own person exclusively? The key is to think small and go with less items that have more impact.

Some examples:

I have this gorgeous dog pillow in my shop Sarah Lyall Home. This pillow could easily be incorporated into a room with a few more dog inspired items without overwhelming the space.

Here are some more items that you might think about adding, if you were to use this pillow:

This print is from FrecklesandWit on Etsy. You could frame this print and pair it with other non dog related prints for a minimal look.

If you have a bookshelf, you might like some dog inspired bookends or figurines:

These cutie Dachshund bookends are from KnobCreekMetalArts on Etsy.

This gorgeous little guy can be found at SirRamique.

The great thing about decorating with a theme is that you have the ability to decide how much or how little of the theme you want to use. You can even put all theme pieces together and make one grouping, the ideas are endless.

I would love to see your themes!

My favorite color of the moment: Dark Purple

I am not sure why, but my favorite color of the moment is dark purple. I have been attracted to purple jewelry, purple clothes, and purple items for the home. There is just something elegant about this color that tends to add depth to any design.

Purple is not one of those colors that you would want to use in a large space. Rather it should be instituted in the smaller design features in a room. Here are some of my favorite pieces of purple decor

This vase from Mybliss2010 is simply stunning.

These coasters from CarovaCreations would add a gorgeous feminine touch to a room.

Although this isn’t in my price range, I would love to have this art by Statements2000 in my home.

What do you think? Can you see purple in your home’s future?

No more Wal-Mart

I had an epiphany the other day while I  was walking through Office Depot. I was checking prices on office supplies and I found myself thinking “I could get this cheaper at Wal-Mart.” This was after, I might add, that I had watched documentaries and read articles on how Wal-Mart gets those “everyday low prices.” Wal-Mart utilizes practices that are akin to slave labor to offer those prices. They also wipe out those lovely mom and pop stores that we all love, even going as far as taking over towns.

I have known these facts about Wal-Mart for a long time and yet I still justified giving them business. I am a college student and I operate a small online business. Money is tight and a dollar does go further at Wal-Mart, but at what cost? Finally, as I walked through Office Depot the other day, I decided that my morals were more important than the few cents extra that I would have to pay to support Wal-Mart.

So, If we aren’t going to shop at Wal-Mart anymore, how are we going to decorate our home on a budget? The answer is that we will have to be more creative and save for things that we really want. Anyway, wouldn’t you rather have quality handmade decor than cheap Wal-Mart items that you are going to have to soon replace.

I have taken the liberty of scouring Etsy for some budget friendly decor items for your upcoming fall decorating. I have given myself a budget of $30 or less because that is what I would have justified spending on Wal-Mart decor. Here are my findings:

Where to shop:

1.  Pam’s Crafts

2. Ryen’s Marketplace

3. EdieKay Co.

4. Julia Paul Pottery

5. Southern Supply

Your House From a Different Perspective

Recently, something weird happened to me. I just lost interest in decorating my house. Yes, I was spending quality time with my sewing machine:

I was doing laundry:

And collecting vintage for my shop:

While their is nothing wrong with sewing and collecting vintage and laundry is a must, I was neglecting everything else that wasn’t essential like school.

Not pictured was the flurry of paperwork that exams had left on my living room floor.

With all the chaos gathering around me, I stopped thinking of my house as a place of beauty and started thinking of it as a place to sleep.

Today, I have started the process of making my home the place that I was proud enough of to start this blog on. Now if I can just make some time to do the sewing I need to do for me. I still need some curtains and throw pillows for my bedroom.

If you would like to check out where my creativity has been going for the last while, you can check out my store at Sarah Lyall Home

Talk to me, have you ever had to reevaluate how you feel about your home to get your creative juices flowing again?

Something Old Something New

As many of you know, I have been putting a lot of emphasis on bringing my dream of having my own home decor shop to life. I have literally spent countless hours creating and curating my shop in the last while.

Trust me the pictures in the shop, like the one above, are so much clearer now. I decided early on to include some appropriate vintage pieces in my shop to help give the shop some dimension.

Recently, I was trying to get some advertising spots on some other blogs and someone told me that my shop just wouldn’t fit because it was not modern enough. I was blown away.

In my opinion vintage pieces serve to augment the look of modern pieces and to make the connection between the old and the new. Furthermore, most pieces of decor either don’t go out of style to begin with (give or take anything shag) or they circle back around.

Take the above collage, the pillows are modern and handmade (by me) and the plate and the cup and saucer are vintage. I don’t know about you, but I think they would look gorgeous together in the same space.

I love modern design and clean lines, but I also love to throw in pieces of vintage in unexpected places. I guess my shop is just an extension of my design philosophy.

What do you think? Do you think modern can coexist in harmony in the same space?

You can visit the shop if you like at Sarah Lyall Home and as always if you are reader of my blog you are entitled to the BFD10 coupon code and you can use it as often as you want.

How to make a Coffee Cozy

I am so behind on this. I want to start by apologizing to anyone who was spammed by my blog. Unfortunately, I got hacked. Thankfully, I am back on track and ready to show you how to make your own coffee cozy.

First you will want to go to Starbucks or anywhere that sells hot coffee and get a hand guard like this one:

You will need to get a fabric pen ( I used a regular one, but my fabric was dark enough) and trace the hand guard. You will then want to go back and trace a 1/4 inch extra line around your guard so that you will have some room for your seem.

Once you get your front and back cut out, you will want to cut a piece of batting. This time you will trace your guard again, but you don’t have to add the 1/4 inch inseam.

Once you have all your pieces cut out, you will then want to stack them with the batting on top, followed by the pretty fabric (ugly side up) and the backing fabric (pretty side up). You will then sew all three pieces together.

Once you have sewn three sides of your cozy, you will want to add a piece of elastic to one end then sew the end closed with your machine. Lastly, you will want to sew a  button on the other side.

Your final product will look like this:

Its as easy as that! If you make one, I would love to see it.

Just a quick note Budget Friendly Decorating on Etsy has a new name….Sarah Lyall Home….Come by and check it out!
